In cheaper, budget carpet sand was added to the latex used to bind the tufted primary to the secondary backing. The sand bulked up the latex and made it go further when coating, lowering the cost of laminating the primary and secondary. i think buying the sand is the way to go the up side of using Petrobond sand and sand casting is that its all reusable. i cast small stuff in sand and plaster molds you do get a better finish but i dont think you would have much luck doing something that big especially bronze the plaster sand mix starts to breakdown at 1500 degrees and making a two part plaster mold would be hard i doubt …

I’ve done sand, top soil, and 2:1 top soil to sand. All of them worked to varying different degrees. The deeper areas that I just used sand in, don’t seem to rise as quick as I’d like, so in retrospect I wish I had done 2:1 there and just let the grass grow back in over time.

Two reasons I can think of: The sand and the sand. Building on sand is a massive problem; foundations for stability and weight bearing would have to be pretty deep. And the desert isn't even that flat which trains like. The other problem is going to be sandstorms. Even if we get our tracks laid, they would probably get burred extremely quickly.
