However, many reddit threads (albeit 2 years old now) say that buying minecraft java through the microsoft store is different to buying it through minecraft.net, and that I would be less able to play mods and servers.

Mar 12, 2022 · Worth mentioning that you have to run the regular version of whatever minecraft version you're modding at least once. Installing Forge requires the file it's modding to already be on your computer.
