May 12, 2008 · Unlike Dovetail, I learned my formwork/concrete almost solely from books, then had at it. Got conflicting advice and decided I'd go with what was printed. Two primarily: "Construction Manual: Concrete Formwork" ISBN 0-910460-03-5, and "Cast-in-Place Walls" booklet from the American Concrete Institute in Detroit (no ISBN #).

As noted in my OP, 16"x16" old block piers have already been dug out by someone else where the new piers are going to go; therefore, the hole is now way too large and "sloppy" to be useful to use as part of the form.

You can get 1', 2', 3', and 4' wide, by 8' long. New cost is around $40 for a 2' x 8' piece. They are easy to set up and strip, and they stack nicely on a trailer or truck bed.

Jul 19, 2009 · Masonite over at least 1/2" plywood or you will wind up with concrete feet.I posted earlier to use a double layer of 3/8"plywood if it bends easily. If not use 3 layers of 1/4" plywood.I believe he said the walls are 8'-0" high, masonite alone has no strength.

Aug 5, 2001 · Re: plywood for concrete forms My experience in the forming has been using 3/4 inch plywood. Use CDX for speciality forms or 1 or 2 pours (because it is cheap). Special plywood oil soaked (mdo) work for about 6 to 7 pours and corners and edges start coming apart but can get 10 pours plus out of them.
