Oct 16, 2001 · I’ve got a nice job installing a 14’x14′ door opening in a 12″ block wall in a wharehouse w/18′ ceiling. MY engingeer says the 4″x6″x5/16″ angle iron I planned to install as the lintel was fine. The owner wants an I-beam 8 or 12 or 16″ tall.

Nov 1, 2003 · "Cinder Block" is an older term for a very lightweight masonry unit using cinders as an aggregate. In some parts of the wolrd, the term "cinder block" will just get blank stares. I like the idea of the block on the insode, especially in an "inbetween" climate like Texas can have (both summer heat & winter cold).

Now I have no compunction about working with bearing frame walls but I don’t know how it’s done with cinder block walls. The opening will be about 5′ wide. How are the cinder blocks above the cut supported before the lintel is placed?

Nov 26, 2002 · lots of work involved, especially with out good equipment. best to sub to professional mason cutter( cut and remove!). you should layout the cuts yourself--it's nice to grout the cores at the cuts beforehand--easier than forming & grouting after. arch/engineer should spec. lintel size. if you have a lot of block above, roof loads,floor loads....,shoring may be necessary, …

Nov 3, 2009 · There are tables for the size and composition of lintels in a load-bearing block wall. It depends on how many stories it's supporting, and a few other things. I would use either standard framing lumber or a steel beam for the lintel, depending on whether a properly sized wood lintel would fit in the space available above the RO.

Aug 16, 2009 · I would size my opening according to block increments. If you took out a row of block extra above the window opening, filled the cores on the sides that bear the beam and then slid the I-beam into the header opening....you can lay 1 5/8" blocks right back in to cover the beam and maintain the clean block look of the wall.

Apr 30, 2015 · 1 - Lintel: First of all, with a 90'' wide opening, make sure you have a lintel strong enough to support the wall over the window. A 6''X6"X3/8'' steel angle inserted in a slot in the concrete wall would do the job (maybe a smaller steel angle would do, but stronger won't break !).

The brick yard can spec a 4x? lintel for the span and the five courses of brick it has to support. The overhead door header has to be sized to support the roof load and the brick load.

May 23, 2014 · When forming an opening, you choose the level where the lintel will go, you mark out its width, then you can see a triangle ,is formed above, as each brick at the far ends of the lintel, is half supporting the one above, and so on rising to the centre of the proposed opening, forming an imaginary step by step brick staircase.
