The discussion, design tables, and design philosophies are intended to assist architects and engineers in the design of concrete masonry and precast concrete lintels and to acquaint builders and contractors with recommended construction methods and details.
Lintel Design Manual – Concrete Masonry and Precast Concrete Lintels
Openings in concrete masonry walls are typically spanned by horizontal structural members known as lintels. Depending upon regional nomenclature, the terms lintel and beam are often interchanged. Regardless of the terminology used, the design approach and philosophy are identical for both elements.
Design of a Lintel - Civil Engineering Portal
A lintel is a horizontal structural member that is present on top of doors, windows, etc. to support the top load falling on these openings. These are used for load bearing purposes, to transfer its load to the side walls and sometimes for decorative purposes.
Base lintel design on loading and aesthetics, but always detail to prevent cracks and leaks. By Christine Beall. Figure 1. Corbeled arch created by natural arching action of running bond masonry. Figure 2. Arching action above a lintel determines area of load. Figure 3. Concentrated load distribution. ( F i g u r e 2).
ASD of Concrete Masonry Lintels Based on the 2012 IBC/2011 …
Lintels and beams are horizontal structural members designed to carry loads above openings. Although lintels may be constructed of grouted and reinforced concrete masonry units, precast or cast-in-place concrete, or structural steel, this TEK …
Lintel Design for Beginner Engineers - YouTube
May 26, 2021 · In this video I demonstrate a simple lintel design example as a practicing engineer. Lintel design is very basic but still just as important to know as any o...
Lintel [a comprehensive study on types of lintel]
Mainly there are two types of lintels depending on the type of construction. 01. Constructed on all Walls. For single-story buildings, lintels are provided on all the walls and they are connected together. Figure 01 indicates the arrangement of the continuing lintel.
Design and Detailing of Lintels in Masonry Walls
Oct 25, 2020 · Lintels are beam elements designed to support a portion of a wall having an opening within it. The actions on the lintel can be a triangular formation of the masonry units above the opening. Bonding of the wall causes it to arch over the opening. Figure 1 indicates how vertical actions are applied on lintels.
Masonry lintels must be rein- forced. They can be constructed of standard clay masonry units (solid or hollow), glazed brick and tile, specially formed con- crete masonry lintel units, bond beam concrete masonry units, or standard concrete masonry units with grooved, depressed, or …
First, start with getting more accurate material strengths defined for masonry. Second, recognize that masonry walls should have masonry lintels. Walls with masonry lintels perform better than steel lintels or precast lintels, have less maintenance issues, and cost less.
