My front door where the lock is, doesn't get much heat during the winter so when I've tried battery operated ones, they just die within a few weeks during the winter months. May 17, 2017 · Most smart locks (Kwikset, Schlage, Yale) have the same underlying lock technologies for their deadbolts. They use the same style key as their non-smart locks. The August lock is just a mechanized cover for an existing Deadbolt, so it will use the same key as the existing lock. I have the Kwikset Smartcode 916, which has "Smart Key" capabilities.

No, kicking a door in with a deadbolt + knob lock is almost as easy as kicking it in with deadbolt only. The door frame is going to split/fail with minimal force. (but definitely more force than is required to pass the knob lock only.) Next DIY to secure the door is to add a long piece of angle iron to the frame with some long screws.

I have the Yale Real Living z-wave, too. I just replaced the lock cylinder with one for an AssaAbloy Protec2 key (keyed to match the deadbolt on my front door. The zwave lock is on the door from the garage into the house.)

So I spent about $800 for two locks, one of which functions at a bare minimum, and one of which will not allow the door to stay locked. That one just has the batteries removed and the front door is basically unusable.
