Persons with a history of food allergy can apply for military service, but there is a step-wise sequence to determine eligibility or disqualification. The reaction to which you refer occurred more than 15 years prior. Perhaps your patient is able to pass an oral food challenge without reaction.

If you are excluded from the military due to a history of food allergies, you can request a waiver and make an appointment with a military-approved allergist, who will require that you complete and pass an oral food challenge. Prospective recruits with oral allergy syndrome may also qualify for a waiver.

Waivers for food allergies may be granted after the recruit speaks with a physician or allergist. Often, the allergist will seek to complete an oral food challenge to determine if the recruit is suitable for service. Finally, the military also has a protocol for personnel who develop food allergies while already in service.
