In the realm of natural language processing (NLP), different model architectures serve distinct purposes. Understanding the differences between encoder-only, decoder-only, and encoder-decoder models can help in selecting the right model for a specific task.
Encoder-Only Models
Encoder-only models, such as BERT, are primarily used for tasks that require understanding the context of a given text. These models are designed to learn representations of words by considering the context on both sides of a word. This bidirectional attention mechanism allows the model to capture the meaning of a word based on its surrounding words. Encoder-only models are typically used for tasks like text classification, named entity recognition, and sentiment analysis1.
