    Origin
    mid 18th century (in the sense mud): probably a variant of dialect slab ‘muddy place, puddle, ooze, sludge’, probably of Scandinavian origin. The word was used to denote various types of person from the 19th century: a weak or foolish person or a fat person (both in Irish English) and a lazy, slovenly person (from the late 19th century).
