A 4 to 2 encoder is a digital circuit that converts four input lines into two output lines. It is a type of combinational circuit that performs the reverse operation of a decoder. The encoder assigns a unique binary code to each possible input combination, effectively reducing the number of lines required to transmit information.
Working Principle
The 4 to 2 encoder has four inputs: Y3, Y2, Y1, and Y0, and two outputs: A1 and A0. At any given time, only one of the four inputs can be '1' to get the respective binary code at the output. The truth table for the 4 to 2 encoder is as follows:
