  1. When Spain became a republic in 1931, it granted Catalonia semi-autonomous status. But during the Spanish Civil War, Catalonia backed the losing side, and in its aftermath the fascist general Francisco Franco again stripped Catalonia of its autonomy, restricted the Catalan language, and repressed its customs.

    Following a symbolic referendum in November 2014, outlawed by Spain, separatists won the 2015 regional election. Catalonia's pro-independence leaders then went ahead with a full referendum on 1 October 2017, which was also declared illegal by Spain's constitutional court.
