Lanternfish are found in all of the world oceans at depths ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 feet (about 360 to 900 meters). They are among the most widely distributed, diverse and populous vertebrates, with some estimates suggesting that they may have a total global biomass of 1.8 to 16 gigatonnes, accounting for up to 65% of all deep-sea fish biomass. Most species prefer to remain close to the coast where they are commonly found in large schools near the continental slopes. Tropical regions contain the highest numbers and greatest species diversity of lanternfish, but lanternfish are also found in polar regions.
