    The city was first mentioned in 1050 in official records as Noremberg, but it had its origin in a castle (now known as Kaiserburg [imperial castle]) built about 10 years earlier by the German king Henry III, duke of Bavaria, who became in 1046 Holy Roman emperor.
    Around 1050 the Holy Roman emperor Henry III (ruled 1039 – 1056) built a castle on a hill north of the Pegnitz River, known as Nuremberg.
    The first documentary mention of the city, in 1050, mentions Nuremberg as the location of an imperial castle between East Francia and the Margraviate of the Nordgau of Bavaria. [ 7 ] From 1050 to 1572 the city expanded and rose dramatically in importance due to its location on key trade-routes.
