Diving is a swimming stroke that is used to enter the water from a platform or springboard, or to jump into the water from the side of the pool. A dive can also be used to perform a quick turn or to change directions while swimming.

Diving is an aquatic sport where the competition is based on how an athlete dives into a swimming pool from a raised launch pad, while performing acrobatic movements. Based on the launch pads used, diving is split into two types, springboard and platform.

In its more elaborate, acrobatic form, diving originated in Europe early in the 19th century as a diversion of gymnasts and as a competitive sport in the late 19th century. It became a part of the swimming program of the Olympic Games in 1904 and developed rapidly through the first half of the 20th century.
