Simply put, a prophet is someone chosen by God to speak for God. Their job, whatever the time period or tidings, was to accurately impart His message. Men and women called to this task came from differing backgrounds, personalities and levels of social status.

A prophet, as defined by the Bible, is someone who speaks God’s truth to others. The English word “prophet” comes from the Greek word “prophetes,” meaning “one who speaks forth” or “advocate.” Prophets have both a teaching and revelatory role, delivering God’s truth on contemporary issues and revealing future events.

A prophet was an individual who received a call from God to be God's spokesperson, often connected with some crisis that was about to occur, and then announced God's message of judgment and/or deliverance to Israel and the nations.

B iblical prophets are persons who convey a message from God, or teach the Word of God. In addition, sometimes God gave them a prophecy of the future to convey to the people of their time. In some cases, God used them in a miracle (e.g., Moses, Elijah the prophet, etc.).
