Ricky Rubio is helped off the court after suffering a left knee injury. Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ricky Rubio has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season, the team announced on Wednesday.

Rubio was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in August 2021, but was dealt to the Indiana Pacers a month after suffering a season ending ACL injury in December. In August 2023, Rubio announced he was taking a break from the sport to prioritise his mental health.

The 32-year-old Rubio had a major impact in the Cavs’ turnaround last season before tearing his left anterior cruciate — for the second time in his career — while driving to the basket at New Orleans on Dec. 28, 2021. Rubio practiced Wednesday in Utah and, as long as he doesn’t have any discomfort, he’ll play against the Trail Blazers.

Ricky Rubio has taken a break from his basketball career to focus on his mental health. He was set to enter his 19th season of professional basketball and has played longer than most players his age. He's one of the few athletes who are open about the importance of mental health, breaking the stigma around it.
