A bit (short for binary digit) is the most basic unit of information in computing and digital communications. It represents a logical state with one of two possible values: 0 or 1. These values can also be interpreted as true/false, yes/no, on/off, or +/-12.
Binary System and Representation
In the binary system, which is the foundation of all digital technology, a bit is the smallest possible container for information. Computers use binary numbers to communicate, where 1 represents "on" or "true" and 0 represents "off" or "false"2. This binary code forms the basis for all digital information processing and data transfers.
Bits and Bytes
While a bit is the smallest unit of data, multiple bits can be grouped together to form larger units. The most common grouping is the byte, which consists of 8 bits. A byte can represent 256 (2^8) different states and is typically the smallest unit that can represent a letter of the alphabet2. Other groupings include the nibble (4 bits), kilobit (1,000 bits), megabit (1,000 kilobits), and so on2.
