Difference between "≈", "≃", and "≅" - Mathematics Stack Exchange
For a closer similarity "≃" might mean a triangle almost congruent but only ROUGHLY similar, such as two triangles 3/4/5 and 3.1/4.1/5.1 while "≅" means congruent. Real life triangles use approximations and have rounding errors. 3/4 does not equal 3.1/4.1 but could be rough approximations for something already constructed.
View question - ≈ vs. ~ --- Which symbol is more correct to use?
Feb 14, 2017 · Another approximation symbol is the double-tilde ≈, meaning "approximately equal to",[5][7][8] the critical difference being the subjective level of accuracy: ≈ indicates a value which can be considered functionally equivalent for a calculation within an acceptable degree of error, whereas ~ is usually used to indicate a larger, possibly ...
What’s the difference between equals signs ≈, ≅, and ≃?
Jun 29, 2017 · My professors have seemed to use $≅$ and $≈$ pretty interchangeably to indicate that something is nearly equal to something else, and I just became aware of $≃$. When should we use one of these in...
Use of approximation sign - Mathematics Stack Exchange
Aug 2, 2017 · I have a question regarding the placement of the almost equal to sign in relation to the equal to sign. For example, can I write: $$129{.}87\cdot 6\approx 130 \cdot 6 = 780 $$ or is it more correct to write: $$129{.}87\cdot 6\approx 130 \cdot 6 \approx 780 $$ since $129{.}87\cdot 6$ is not equal to the approximation $780$?
What is the notation of equal or almost equal?
Aug 6, 2019 · I have a measure X and the value of $X$ is equal to or almost $1000$. This can be $X=1000$, $X=999$, or $X=998$.
logic - what is the difference between ≈ and ≃? - Mathematics …
There is no universally accepted notation, but $\approx$ and $\simeq$ both generally mean "approximately equal to." However $\simeq$ is sometimes used to denote "is similar," for instance that two triangles are similar ($\triangle ABC \simeq \triangle DEF$). You would rarely, if ever, use $\approx$ in that situation.
Approximately not equal - Mathematics Stack Exchange
Feb 19, 2016 · The first one should be easy: “almost equal to” and “approximately equal to” are I think both clear and widely accepted. Personally I prefer “approximately (equal to)”, while Unicode calls this symbol “almost equal to”. The second is harder already. Personally I'd call this “not approximately equal to”.
notation - When to use congruent vs approximately?
Sep 28, 2013 · The notation $\cong$ corresponds to U+2245 APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO “≅”, and $\approx$ corresponds to U+2248 ALMOST EQUAL TO “≈”. However, the Unicode names, written in all uppercase, are rather misleading here; and the names are really symbolic identifiers rather than normal names.
Different use of approximate equality symbols
Apr 12, 2016 · For example "The table is $\sim 4$ feet in length" or "$\pi\approx 3.1415$". So, when saying two numbers are almost the same $\approx$ when saying one number is almost the desired quantity $\sim$. $\endgroup$ –

Jul 28, 2010 · $\begingroup$ I don't see anywhere on the Wikipedia page you linked to where it recommended writing $\pi \fallingdotseq 3.14\ldots.$ It says that $\fallingdotseq$ means "asymptotically equal to," which is a different kind of approximation.
