How to Install a Kitchen Sink Drain Disconnect the drainpipe and take out any existing strainer. Wind a rope of plumber's putty on the underside of the basket strainer. Insert the basket strainer into the sink hole and fit the rubber washer and friction ring beneath. Screw and tighten the nut to the bottom of the basket strainer.

Apply Plumber’s Putty: Roll a rope of putty about the thickness of a pencil and press it evenly around the underside of the new drain flange (that’s the circular ridge around the drain piece). Also, apply the tape to the threads of the drain pieces. Insert the Drain: Position the drain in the sink hole and press down firmly to create a seal.
