An acoustic sealant is a specialized sound-absorbing soundproofing caulk that adheres to most building materials – wood, metal, gypsum, and concrete. It is a water-based, non-flammable, non-toxic, low odor substance that is even freeze-thaw stable. The rubbery material can even handle seasonal expansion and contraction of materials.

Acoustic caulk is essentially a rubber-like material that doesn’t harden when used to create sound barriers. It’s a non-flammable sealant that’s usually latex-based, explicitly designed to reduce sound transmission. Furthermore, acoustic sealant acts as a vapor barrier as well.

Acoustical sound sealants are used to prevent unwanted sounds from escaping through cracks that surround lightweight cavity walls, flooring systems, wall-penetrating equipment (like air conditioning ducts), door sills and other places where it only takes a crack to cause a commotion.
