determining if ABG was really a VBG | Student Doctor Network
Mar 21, 2008 · O2 uptake in a warm limb can be quite low, resulting in very small differences in ABG vs VBG values measured in peripheral samples. For someone on supplemental oxygen with basically normal lungs (NL diffusion, no shunt), a high (over ~100) PO2 on a peripheral stick all but guarantees that it's an arterial sample.

Oct 23, 2009 · VBG is useful for DKA and on patients whom you want to know the pH. Typically a normal VBG pH is 7.30 to 7.35, whereas an ABG has a pH of 7.35 to 7.40.
IM intern vs. RT: ABG smackdown | Student Doctor Network
Dec 28, 2010 · The RN throws on 2L and call the RT who proceeds to argue against an ABG but you have to argue for it because your attending wants it. I can understand why pH, and even CO2 are important but those are on the VBG. Why do you need the PaO2 though? I know you can calculate the A-a gradient and that can change your differential.

Mar 8, 2013 · I think VBG is plenty fine for AECOPD though I am not as familar with the data as Hern. I am only looking at the pH and CO2 and if the ph corrected for VBG difference is a happy 7.3 with a CO2 of 55 that end stage COPDr is prolly back to baseline, I do not need there PaO2.

Jul 2, 2012 · They demanded a pCO2 which we couldn't get off of the A-line. We tried a VBG thinking it would correlate roughly with a ABG. The VBG demonstrated pCO2 of 41 with EtCO2 at 21 which made us scratch our heads. Since the brain was swollen without another clear reason, we hyperventilated to EtCO2 of 16, repeated, and pCO2 off of VBG was 41 again.

Jul 4, 2016 · VBG vs ABG is a debate I've had with an attending and never want to have again. I think the evidence and logic supports VBG, but opinions seem to strongly vary... Reactions: Crayola227

Jan 9, 2003 · ABG vs VBG- interpretation and indications for use. ( I feel that we overuse the ABG because we are comfortable with interpreting it's values over the VBG) Members don't see this ad.
VBG=ABG, but I "know" my TLC was in the vein! - Student …
Sep 21, 2010 · So I had an older lady in septic shock last night in whom I placed a left subclavian TLC. She was frail and had easily identifiable landmarks - I got back nice dark red blood (witnessed by myself and a nurse present) on my first stick without any complications; prior to threading the wire I...
Hypoxic Respiratory Failure (COPD exac, CHF Exac, Pneumonia)
Feb 18, 2018 · This is one of the most common diagnosis I admit as a hospitalist, and often my patients usually have COPD, & CHF. They end up getting treated for both COPD exacerbation and CHF exacerbation and sometiems if the CXR is unclear (edema vs infection), they get treated w/ abx as well. Lot of waste...

Aug 1, 2010 · Doing some questions last minute here: Does someone with Idiopathic Pulm fibrosis have any special ABG derangements? (like how COPDers retain CO2). I'm assuming their O2 on RA is slightly low, but their pH should really be normal (since it's chronic and compensated). CO2 should be normal...
