Unlike terms, are the terms that do neither have the same variables nor similar power. Some examples of unlike terms are, 40xy2 and 56xy: Here, in one algebraic expression the variable is xy2 and in the other algebraic expression the variable is xy. Both variables are the same but have different powers. So, they are unlike terms.

Unlike terms refers to terms in an algebraic expression that does not have the same literal coefficients and cannot be raised to the same power. Examples of unlike terms: $3x+9y$ $13x+2xy-4y$ For example, the algebraic expression $3x + 9y$ where $x$ and $y$ are two different variables and different coefficients are known as unlike algebraic terms.

The terms which do not have the same literal coefficients raised to the same powers are called dissimilar or unlike terms. For Example: (i) 9p and 9q are unlike terms (ii) x 3 x 3 and y 3 y 3 are unlike terms

For example, in this expression: 5b + 9y, the 5b and 9y are unlike terms because their variables are different. It does become a little more complicated when powers are involved. For example, 6x 2 + 2x 2 are like terms, but 5x 2 + 8x 3 are unlike terms. This is because the powers of x are different.
