    Fossil evidence suggests that the rabbit’s ancestors first appeared around 53 million years ago. These early ancestors were small, mouse-like creatures that lived in forested areas in what is now Asia.
    There are about 40 different species of rabbits, hares, and pikas, all of which are classified as members of the mammalian order Lagomorpha. Based on fossil evidence, Lagomorpha likely originated in Asia during the Eocene epoch, at least 40 million years ago.
