When a female prairie dog is ready to give birth, she goes to the nursery burrow, which is a part of the prairie dog burrow system that is used for raising young. The young, called pups, are born hairless and with eyes closed, and are totally dependent on their mother’s care and love. The mother takes care of her pups until they are about six weeks old and ready to venture above ground. Prairie dog burrows are 5–10 m (16–33 ft) long and 2–3 m (6.6–9.8 ft) below the ground, with entrance holes that are generally 10–30 cm (3.9–11.8 in) in diameter.
