There’s no evidence that wolverines pose any danger to humans at all.

Wolverines can be territorial and solitary, but it’s a myth that they are dangerous. Alaska Fish and Game wildlife biologists Mike Harrington and Howard Golden explained the situation to the Alaska Fish and Wildlife News in 2014, “A lot of myths about them are way overblown,” Golden said. “They’re not extra aggressive, they avoid trouble.”

Folktales suggest that wolverines are the strongest animals in nature, but science has proved this to be largely untrue. These animals can be aggressive, but they only have a moderately strong bite: According to findings published in a 2007 study in the journal Ecology, the animal’s bite force at the canines is 224 Newtons.

The wolverine is fierce: it can kill prey many times its size and will defend food against much larger competitors. But while this ultimate survivalist is more than capable of providing for itself, it has no defense against climate change or traps.
