A horizontally opposed aircraft engine, also known as a flat engine, is a type of reciprocating engine used to drive a propeller. It consists of two banks of an even number of cylinders placed opposite each other with a central crankcase connecting the two. The most common types are the flat-four engine (boxer-four engine) with two pairs of opposed pistons moving inwards and outwards, and the flat-six engine (boxer-six engine) with three pairs of opposed cylinders. These engines have horizontally aligned cylinders.
