With the giant toy retailer Toys 'R' Us filing for bankruptcy last September and liquidation plan for all of its U.S. stores announced in March 2018, both of the two companies' stocks are in red YTD, with Hasbro doing better than Mattel.

And Hasbro's cash ratio is a comparable 0.8. In short, Mattel and Hasbro look almost identical from a liquidity standpoint and neither company should have any trouble at all covering their operating expenses in the coming year. What about from a solvency standpoint?

And while both Hasbro and Mattel by their existence as publicly traded common stocks are exposed to the systemic risk of the broader market, Hasbro due to its recent share price spurt and now lofty valuation is now facing far greater risk to the downside than Mattel whose shares have already shed as much as -50% over the last year and a half.

At today’s opening bell, Mattel’s stock was down 18 percent from a year ago. Hasbro’s stock, which opened at $58.88 today, compared to Mattel’s at $17.70, was down roughly 9 percent compared to a year ago.
