To be blunt: currently, there isn’t a way to hook up a disk drive to an Xbox Series S. Obviously, you’re able to physically attach a disk reader to the console, however, the Xbox won’t read any of the information on the disk.

The Xbox Series X/S have three USB 3.1 ports, which is plenty of space for accessories, including an external drive with a minimum of 128GB of storage. There are plenty of great external options on the market that can get you more storage for less than Xbox's official Expansion Card. For example, you can get the WD Black P10 Game Drive for $79.99.

Microsoft allowed the Xbox Series X and S to plug in external storage drives to expand the usable capacity. There's even an official storage expansion card, which is expensive but runs at the same speeds as the internal drive so that you can run modern games off it.

Titles that are optimized for Xbox Series X|S and Velocity Architecture can be stored on USB 3.0 drives but can only be played on the internal PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD or the external Seagate SSD carts.
