At the end of Captain America: The First Avenger (directed by Joe Johnston with Chris Evans in the titular role) you see Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) holding the Tesseract after being hit by Captain America's shield. This causes it to start glowing and Red Skull seems to dissolve into white light.

At the end of Captain America - The First Avenger, when Red Skull and Captain America are fighting on a plane, Red Skull holds the Tesseract in his hands. And soon a portal opens to another space dimension and the Red Skull disintegrates due to the power of the Tesseract. Did the Red Skull actually die or was he sucked to another space dimension?

It almost worked too! Red Skull managed to age Steve Rogers into an old man as well, and the two had a geriatric fistfight in which the Red Skull "died" for the second time. After the Red Skull's second passing in a fight against Captain America, it was time to even the odds a bit.

Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, George John Maxon appeared as Red Skull in Captain America Comics #1 and #3 (March–May 1941). He faces Captain America during two of the latter's early missions.
