  1. Cryptorchidism
    • According to 4 sources
Undescended testicles, also known as cryptorchidism, is a fairly common and normally painless congenital condition in which one or both of a baby's testicles (testes) have not moved into the proper position. One to 2 percent of male infants are affected. Before a baby boy is born, the testicles form in the child’s abdomen.
In some boys, especially those who are born premature, one or both testicles do not make it down to the scrotum before birth. This is known as cryptorchidism, more commonly called undescended testicles. For babies born with this condition, the testicles sometimes descend on their own—usually by 6 months of age.
Cryptorchidism occurs when one or both of the testicles do not descend into the scrotum while the fetus is developing. During gestation, the testicles form in the abdomen and gradually drop through the inguinal canal into the scrotum at around month 8 of pregnancy. The scrotum is a small pouch, or sac, of skin that hangs behind the penis.
Cryptorchidism is also known as undescended testicles (UDT), or undescended testes, and is usually medically defined as a condition in which a testis is not in the scrotum and doesn’t descend into the scrotum by the time the baby is four months old. 1 It is the most common congenital abnormality of the male genitalia 2 and affects about three in every ten male infants born prematurely. 3 Between one and six percent of all male babies are affected.
