  1. Here are some steps to teach rhythm to elementary students1234:
    • Start with teaching steady beat, which is the foundation of rhythm.
    • Teach the difference between beat and rhythm.
    • Introduce sounds on beats.
    • Introduce rhythm.
    • Point and read rhythms.
    • Make rhythms.
    • Add new rhythms.
    • Break down the value of each type of note.
    • Teach students to feel the beat by having them bring in a recording of their favorite song.
    • Add in the instrument.
    • Teach rhythmic dictation by ear training.
    • Explore basic rhythm by counting to four on a continuous, steady loop, repeating 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4… and adding clapping, tapping, or walking on each beat.
    • Sing a song and ask the class to pat the rhythm while you sing. Then sing it again while they clap the rhythm. Divide the class in two and sing the song a third time - one group pats the beat and another claps the rhythm. You can get instruments involved here as well.

    Rhythm is a pattern of sound which can be repeated to a regular beat. Tempo is the speed of the beat. Here are ways to explore both. TRY THIS: EXPLORE BASIC RHYTHM Count to four on a continuous, steady loop, repeating 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4… This is your rhythm. Add clapping, tapping, or walking on each beat to explore the rhythm further.
