    The t-test is a statistical hypothesis test used to determine if there is a significant difference between the means of two groups. It is commonly applied when the test statistic follows a Student’s t-distribution under the null hypothesis. There are three main types of t-tests: one-sample t-test, independent sample t-test, and paired sample t-test12.

    One-Sample T-Test Formula

    The one-sample t-test is used to compare the mean of a sample to a known value (usually the population mean). The formula is:

    t = (x̄ - μ) / (s / √n)

    where:

    • is the sample mean

    • μ is the population mean

    • s is the sample standard deviation

    • n is the sample size12

    Example

    A fitness company claims that their app helps users burn 350 calories per session. A sample of 12 participants recorded an average of 363.08 calories burned with a standard deviation of 29.74. Using a 95% confidence interval:

    t = (363.08 - 350) / (29.74 / √12) = 1.52
