Staccato markings in music are a dot (.) either above or below the note head. The dot appears below the note if the stems of the notes face up, but it appears above the note when the stems face down. The staccato mark is a clear instruction to play the note short and distinct from the notes before and after it. Every note that has a staccato marking is played very short and is not to be attached to the note after it.
