Spine-Leaf Architecture is a modern network topology designed to overcome the limitations of traditional three-layer hierarchical architecture. It consists of two layers: the spine layer and the leaf layer, connected in a full mesh topology1.
Key Components
Spine Switches: These switches form the backbone of the network and are connected to all leaf switches. They handle Layer 3 network traffic.
Leaf Switches: These switches connect to servers and end users, handling both Layer 2 and Layer 3 network traffic1.
Design Considerations
When designing a spine-leaf architecture, several factors need to be considered:
Oversubscription Rate: This is the rate at which all devices send data simultaneously. It is measured by the ratio between the bandwidth of backbone switches and the capacity of servers1.
Leaf and Spine Sizing: The number of ports in spine switches determines the maximum number of leaf switches. The number of spine switches is governed by the required throughput, redundant paths, and port density1.
Layer 2 and Layer 3 Design: The architecture can be built at either Layer 2 or Layer 3. Layer 2 design provides flexibility and allows VLAN span and MAC address migration. Layer 3 design offers the fastest convergence times and maximum scale ECMP fan-out1.
