  1. Small businesses should keep records for one, three or seven years123. Some records may need to be kept forever1. The following are examples of records and their retention periods2:
    • Permanent records: Retirement plans agreements and employee W-2 forms.
    • 10 years: Worker’s compensation benefits; employee withholding exemption certificates; and payroll records.
    • Seven years: Attendance records; medical benefits; performance records; personnel files; payroll checks; and time reports.
