Sandstone is medium-grained, meaning its fragments are between 1/16 mm and 2 mm. Silt forms fine-grained siltstone, with fragments between 1/16 mm and 1/256 mm. Anything less than 1/256 mm results in either claystone or mudstone.

    – sand or arenitic grain size (0.0625 – 2 mm) and the corresponding sandstone; – silt or siltitic grain size (0.004 – 0.0625 mm) and the corresponding siltstone; – clay or lutitic grain size (<0.004 mm), whose lithified counterpart is claystone.

There are more than 50 classification schemes for sandstones but the diagram by Dott (1964) is the most widely used. This classification can be used on sand and sandstones. It is based on (1) the percentage of matrix, defined as the grain size < 30 μm and (2) the proportion of quartz, feldspar, and lithic fragments in the > 30 μm framework grains.
