    A programmable read-only memory (PROM) is a form of digital memory where the contents can be changed once after manufacture of the device. The data is then permanent and cannot be changed. It is one type of read-only memory (ROM).
    Short for programmable read-only memory, a memory chip on which data can be written only once. Once a program has been written onto a PROM, it remains there forever. Unlike RAM, PROMs retain their contents when the computer is turned off.
    PROM stands for Programmable Read-Only Memory It is a memory chip on which information can be composed as it were once. Once a program has been composed onto a PROM, it remains there until the end of time. Not at all like Ram, PROMs hold their substance when the computer is turned off.
