The Prodigal Son is a parable found in the Gospel of Luke, specifically in Luke 15, in the New Testament of the Bible. The parable tells the story of a younger son who asks his father for his share of the inheritance, then goes away and squanders it on extravagant living.

The Bible story of the Prodigal Son, also known as the Parable of the Lost Son, follows immediately after the parables of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin. With these three parables, Jesus demonstrated what it means to be lost, how heaven celebrates with joy when the lost are found, and how the loving Father longs to save people.

The prodigal son was an allegory for people who had given themselves to a corrupt way of life. In the immediate context, the prodigal son represented the tax collectors and sinners Jesus associated with.
