  1. Sorting (sediment) - Wikipedia

    • The terms describing sorting in sediments – very poorly sorted, poorly sorted, moderately sorted, well sorted, very well sorted – have technical definitions and semi-quantitatively describe the amount of variance seen in particle sizes.Very poorly sorted indicates that the sediment sizes are mixed (large variance); whereas well sorted indicates that the sediment … See more

    Overview

Sorting describes the distribution of grain size of sediments, either in unconsolidated deposits or in sedimentary rocks. … See more

    Processes involved in sorting

Sediment sorting is influenced by: grain sizes of sediment, processes involved in grain transport, deposition, and post-deposition processes such as winnowing. As a result, studying the degree of sorting in deposits … See more

  1. Very poorly sorted – sediment sizes vary largely and are mixed in sizes (small to large) within a stata (layer). Degree of sorting indicates the energy, rate, and duration of deposition and how the sediments were transported (i.e., volcanic debris flow, streams, wind, glaciers, still water etc).

Rocks derived from well sorted sediments are commonly both porous and permeable, while poorly sorted rocks have low porosity and low permeability, particularly when fine grained.

Coarse-grained sediment and poorly sorted rocks are usually found nearer to the source of sediment, while fine sediments are carried farther away. In a rapidly flowing mountain stream, you would expect to see boulders and pebbles.

Sep 10, 2018 · Poorly-Sorted Sediments. Poorly-sorted sediments display a variety of sizes including cobbles, pebbles, and sand. The sediments come in many shapes, from flat to round, due to the nature of the source rock and …

If all of the particles are of a similar size, such as in beach sand, the sediment is well-sorted. If the particles are of very different sizes, the sediment is poorly sorted, such as in glacial deposits.
