List every item of value in your house. Make sure to copy serial numbers of your personal items. Keep all receipts along with a description of the items. Keep a detailed record of antiques, jewelry, major appliances, and collector’s items. Continuously update your home inventory as you acquire new items.

Some insurance companies provide Household Inventory lists which can be helpful with this task. Items such as sofas, tables, beds, TVs, refrigerators, and lawn mowers should be included in such a schedule. As you compile your inventory, supplement it with receipts indicating the date of purchase and purchase price and photographs of major items.
