Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai announced she will retire from tennis competitions months after an apparent disappearance and international outcry about her well-being. The news: Peng told the French sports news outlet L’Équipe that she will retire from tennis, thanking her fans from across the world for supporting her.

Peng has made some limited public appearances since the incident and announced her retirement from professional tennis. Although unsatisfied with the case, the WTA announced that it would return to China in 2023.

Peng also told L’Equipe that she is unlikely to return to the WTA Tour, ending her professional competitive tennis career at age 36. She cited multiple knee surgeries and the COVID-19 pandemic behind her decision: Since the Qatar Open in February 2020, Peng has not competed, and she said she also did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
