OpenAI is reportedly developing a new web search product to rival Google and Bing. The tool may utilize Microsoft’s Bing search functionality and emphasize contextual, conversational search. Its integration with ChatGPT and leveraging of Microsoft’s AI investments suggest a knowledge-based approach.

OpenAI has been developing a web search product, partly powered by Microsoft Bing, a source told The Information. This shouldn’t be too surprising, considering: OpenAI has a web crawler, GPTBot. ChatGPT Plus users can also use Browse with Bing to search the web. Microsoft Bing uses OpenAI’s GPT-4, customized for search.

Now, the company is said to be developing a search product in a move that could offer Google its first real competition since its inception more than two decades ago. The news comes from The Information, which claims the new tool will be partially based on Microsoft's Bing search engine but will otherwise be similar to Google.

According to recent reports, OpenAI’s new tool will work in a similar way to ChatGPT, but will be able to pull real-time information and citations from the web, thanks to its partnership with Bing. The search platform will also present users with images like traditional search engines.
