Mips is a patented Brain Protection System (BPS) available in almost every Giro helmet model. It adds a measure of protective capability in certain impacts beyond the helmet’s outer shell and impact-absorbing foam liner and helps to reduce rotational motion transferred to the brain—especially during those first critical milliseconds.

The multi-directional impact protection system (MIPS) is a low-friction, rotation-damping plastic liner added to the inside of bike helmets. Testing shows that MIPS reduces the rotational motion of the head during angular impacts by allowing the head to move 10mm to 15mm in the helmet.

The Mips safety system is additional helmet tech that’s designed to help prevent certain cycling-related brain injuries. Mips is designed to help reduce the harmful forces that might otherwise be transferred to the rider’s head.

A Swedish company called Multi-directional Impact Protection System - MIPS - has revived and patented the slip plane concept, using two layers in the helmet to help the head rotate slightly on impact. The hope is to reduce the rotational component of an impact, thought to be a prime brain injury mechanism and related to concussion.
