MIPS technology mimics the brain’s protective structure by reducing rotational forces caused by angled impacts to the head. In a MIPS hemet the shell and liner are separated by a low friction layer which allows the helmet to slide, noticeably reducing trauma to the brain in the case of oblique impacts.

The Mips system consists of a low friction layer that is mounted inside the helmet. In a crash, the low friction layer is designed to move slightly inside the helmet in order to help redirect forces away from the head. This is intended to help reduce the risk of brain injury.

Helmets which include MIPS technology have added a thin, second layer inside the helmet. This layer is made of a polycarbonate plastic and coated with Teflon and sits directly beneath your standard helmet liner. While you'll be able to move it slightly inside the helmet, it won't really work until an impact occurs.

In a helmet equipped with the MIPS safety system, a low-friction layer allows the helmet to slide relative to the head, resulting in a reduction of the rotational motion that may otherwise be transmitted to the brain. In this way, the MIPS approach mimics the natural safety system of the human head. [ 4]
