Cut open the melon, scoop the seeds into a bowl and cover them with water. Let the seeds soak at room temperature out of direct light for several days, stirring them occasionally to help dislodge the seeds from the sticky pulp. After a few days, the water will develop a layer of floating seeds that should be discarded because they're not viable.

When saving watermelon seeds for planting, you must first remove the seeds from the watermelon. Next, allow the seeds to dry sufficiently for a week or so. Turn the seeds over to promote complete drying. Lastly, save the seeds in a paper envelope or bag until next year. Once the seeds are completely dry, you can also store them in plastic bags.
