Medieval clothing for men was a reflection of the social hierarchy, occupation, and personal status. The clothing choices varied depending on the time period, region, and the individual’s social standing. While the wealthy nobles and knights adorned themselves in lavish garments, the peasants and commoners had simpler attire.

Outer clothes were not so different between the sexes either except that those for men were shorter and the sleeves roomier. As all clothes were tailor-made, a good fit was guaranteed. The taste for colours was the brighter the better, with crimson, blue, yellow, green & purple being popular choices in all types of clothes.

During the early medieval times, various traditional styles in medieval men’s clothing were used. This included trousers which were worn under a short tunic and sometimes used with a small cloak. Leggings were also traditionally used and worn in pairs.

In the Early Medieval Period, often referred to as the Dark Ages (5th-10th century), the men’s clothing was practical and utilitarian. The primary garment was the ‘tunica,’ a simple, rectangular woolen piece often belted at the waist, accompanied by ‘braccae’ or trousers.
