A moderating variable is a type of variable that influences the relationship between a dependent variable and an independent variable. It can either strengthen, weaken, or negate the relationship between these two variables1.
Key Principles
Moderating variables can be either qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative variables include categories such as gender, education level, or marital status. Quantitative variables include numerical values such as age, height, or population size1.
Example
Consider a study where the independent variable is the number of hours spent exercising each week, and the dependent variable is the resting heart rate. A moderating variable in this context could be gender. The relationship between exercise and resting heart rate might be different for men compared to women. Similarly, age could also be a moderating variable, with younger individuals potentially experiencing a greater reduction in resting heart rate with increased exercise compared to older individuals1.
