Managing Scrupulosity is a service from the priest director of the monthly newsletter “Scrupulous Anonymous.” This newsletter, a pastoral service from Liguori Publications (A Roman Catholic Media Company), has been published since 1964.

Each person with scrupulosity lives in relationship with others. Some are casual acquaintances, but others are spouses, children, extended family members, all of whom need help and guidance to support the member of their family who suffers with this disorder.

Scrupulosity involves an emotional condition that interferes with the proper working of the mind and produces a judgment not in accordance with objective truth, but with the emotion of fear. How can a person be sure that they are scrupulous?

Our best available evidence seems to suggest that we might understand scrupulosity in two distinct manifestations: developmental scrupulosity and emotional scrupulosity.

Scrupulosity is not one or the other, it is rather both and another. In fact, the layers of scrupulosity and the consequences of the disorder can be discovered in a person’s religious practice. In their spiritual awareness. In their psychological profile. In their societal and cultural traditions, concerns, and manifestations.

This form of scrupulosity is best pastorally remedied through patience, the insistence of maintaining the discipline of a single confessor who can aid the penitent through the navigation of their understanding of sin.

The primary purpose for this condition is to mutually determine if spiritual direction is potentially beneficial for the directee and helpful for their personal management of scrupulosity.
