Listserver software, commonly referred to as LISTSERV, is a type of software application used to manage electronic mailing lists. It allows a sender to send one email to a list, which then transparently sends it on to the addresses of the subscribers to the list.

    History and Development

The original Listserv software, known as Bitnic Listserv, was developed by Ira Fuchs, Daniel Oberst, and Ricky Hernandez in 1984. It allowed mailing lists to be implemented on IBM VM mainframes and was a key service on the BITNET network. In 1986, Éric Thomas developed an independent application called "Revised Listserv," which was the first automated mailing list management application. This innovation allowed users to join or leave a list without the need for human administration.

    Features and Innovations

LISTSERV introduced several key features over the years:

    • Automated Mailing List Management: Users could join or leave a list without human intervention.

    • Double Opt-In: Introduced in 1993, this feature required users to confirm their subscription to a mailing list.

    • Spam Filter: Introduced in 1995, it was one of the first spam filters in mailing list software.

    Editions and Licensing

LISTSERV is available in several licensing options:
