  1. lancet fluke life cycle

Organizing and summarizing search results for you
The life cycle of the lancet fluke includes two intermediate stages and one definitive stage. The eggs containing miracidia are shed in feces of definitive hosts, which are typically ruminants. The eggs are then ingested by the first intermediate host, which is a snail. When the miracidia hatch, they migrate through the gut wall and settle into the adjacent vascular connective tissue, where they become mother sporocysts. The surviving flukes feed on their new host's blood, become adults, and lay eggs, which the host excretes in its feces. Snails then consume the feces, along with the fluke eggs. Those eggs hatch into larval flukes that reproduce asexually, reaching several thousand in number.
